Survivor Nicaragua week 4

This was an email I sent to my fellow Survivor watchers.

What the heck?  I thought the older tribe was getting it together with the practice blindfolding.  They turned out to be so bad.  Jimmy T said he couldn’t hear with everyone else yelling.  But that didn’t keep him still.  He was moving around picking up nothing and getting in the way.  To be fair, Tyrone might not have been the best caller.  I don’t know who would have been, but it was clear the younger tribe had a much better caller.

I’m glad Jimmy T is gone.  (Sorry Jukie and Erin— my friend Jukie and niece Erin had Jimmy T in our pool) I think he was a better asset to the tribe than Danny, but I will not miss his constant talking.
From the looks of the preview for next week, it appears there is a change coming.  If it’s a merge, those who have voted out players are available to buy back in.  It might not be a merge.  I remember a season when all the players were brought together for meal and they assumed a merge was happening.  That turned out to be a wrong assumption.
This is more likely a change up of the teams.  Two new teams will be formed out of the young and old.

So far I’m not a huge fan of this season.  The last two seasons were fun filled with surprising twists and turns.  We saw good players, conniving players, and interesting strategy. This season is flat.  Well, maybe not totally flat. NaOnka continues to show us she is a bully and will go down in “Survivor History” as the most disgusting player of all time.  Marty’s hair is trying to be like Jimmy J’s hair.  And I”m wondering about my girl Jill.  She’s seems like a strong player but she does everything Marty says.  Time will tell.

Survivor Nicaragua on CBS

One of my favorite shows on TV these days is Survivor.  I watch it each season.  I’m also in a ‘POOL’ with my fellow “Survivor” watchers. This is how the pool works:

We all throw 10 bucks into a pot.

We watch the first show.

Before the second show airs, you must declare who you think will be the “Sole Survivor”

and there is a twist…..

If your survivor player is voted off, you can buy back in at the merge.  You do this with another 10 bucks and picking a survivor player that has not been picked yet.  There are usually 4 or 6 survivor players not picked in the beginning.  These are the only ones eligible for picking after the merge.

and there is another twist…

Say you don’t like who you picked in the beginning of the game.  If you can get someone in our group to buy your player you can sell him/her. If you have sold/auctioned off your player and the merge happens, you can buy back in at that time.  Only people without a player can buy back in at the merge.

You can also trade your survivor players.

Person or persons who picked the “Sole Survivor” wins when the season ends.

It sounds complicated but it’s not.  It’s fun.

This season, my pick is Jill.

Member Chef Night at Little Mill…

I volunteered to a Member Chef Night at our golf club.  I have to make something and serve it to  my fellow members.  What was I thinking????  My hands are getting sweaty already.

I kept thinking, what shall I make?  I really don’t make anything I don’t like to eat myself.  My kids are a measure for me when it comes to my cooking.  They like some of my stuff but not all.  What they really like is just about any soup I make.  I do like to make soup.  Hmmmm…… which soup shall I make.

Feel free to weigh in on this!

:::knock knock:::  is this thing on??

Anyone out there that’s had my soup, or likes soup, tell me your favorite.  I have to make soup for 100 people.

Survivor starts this Wednesday!

Survivor is a show on television that I thought would never make it.  Boy was I wrong!  This Wednesday they will be airing their 21st season.  It looks to have all the makings for a great season.  There will be the old vs young thing going on.  Mix into that a famous coach and a very able amputee and you have all kinds of opportunity for craziness.

I put together a “survivor pool” a few years ago.  It’s crazy fun.  You watch the first show and pick who will be the final survivor – before the airing of the next show.  I’ve only won once.  I had JT a few seasons ago.  I had Colby last season and had high hopes for him.  Oh well, maybe I’ll do better this time around.  I have my list narrowed down to 7 names.  Can’t wait for Wednesday night.

Community Supported Agriculture

I joined a farm.  No, I didn’t move or run away from home.  This organic farm is Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) in New Jersey.  It gives me a challenge every Saturday when I bring home a box of freshly picked produce.  I try to figure out new things to make with this array of vegetables.  Any suggestions??

Chipotle Black Beans

This was the other dish I made for Mexican Buffet at Ben and Jeanne’s house.

Chipotle Black Beans:

1 cup onion  , diced

1 tablespoon vegatable oil

1 teaspoon garlic, minced

2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

2 cans black beans, drained and rinsed

1/2 cup maple syrup

1/2 cup ketchup

2 tablespoons chipotle peppers in adobo sauce, minced

1 teaspoon dry mustard

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

salt to taste

Directions:

Saute onion in oil in a large skillet over medium heat until softened, about 5 minutes.  Stir in garlic; cook about another minute.  Deglaze skillet with vinegar and bring to a boil.  Add beans, maple syrup, ketchup, chiles, mustard and Worcestershire; simmer 10 minutes.  Season with salt.

Notes:

Chipotle chiles in adobo sauce comes in a can.  You only need a little.  I dump out the entire can and mince it all up.  Then I flash freeze 1 tablespoon portions on a wax paper lined cookie sheet.  When they freeze, I put all the tablespoon portions in a baggie and keep in the freezer for later use.

These black beans taste great with “Lime Sour Cream.”

Lime Sour Cream

This is a great condiment.  I use it to garnish soups, chili, tacos, or any where you like sour cream.

Lime Sour Cream:

1 cup Sour Cream

2 tablespoons lime juice, fresh

1/4 teaspoon kosher salt

1/4 teaspoons ground cumin

1 whole lime, zested

Directions:  Just mix it all up!
